Doyne “Sandy” Sanders was a child of the old south. He was born on 23 March 1948 in Lake Village, Chicot Co, Arkansas. His parents were Merlin Leroy SANDERS and Mary Jane SIMS. He was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1966, where his classmates felt that knowing Sandy Sanders and earning his friendship was a gratifying achievement. He was viewed as one of the most conscientious midshipmen - a man who took his responsibilities quietly but firmly - A man who was as unlimited in his dedication to principle and his devotion to ideals. However, he also valued the pleasant things of life. He always looked for the good side of everyone and never put up fronts or tried to fool anyone by being somebody he was not - a quality, perhaps a courage, that all should emulate
Sandy went Navy Air after graduation in June 1970. He married Sarah Anne Newlander and started a family to go along with his new career. Sandy was tragically killed while jogging on 16 December 1978, by a hit and run driver, in Kleberg County, TX. He is survived by his wife Sarah Anne and two daughters Stephanie Anne and Melissa Paige. Sandy was buried on 22 December 1978 in Nashville National Cemetery Section KK Site 1149, Madison, TN.
