Lech Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for his work as a labor activist and for his role in the crafting of a groundbreaking agreement on Polish laborers' rights between workers and the government. He served as Poland's president from 1990 to 1995.

Walesa was in the Philippines to give a lecture at the University of Asia and the Pacific. He also met with President Rodrigo Duterte on 23 January 2018. Duterte, according to a Palace press release, recognized Walesa's role as a labor leader and as president of his country. The highlight of Welesa's visit was meeting with Roy Golez '70 and discussing putting an end to Army's two game Army-Navy football win streak! Go Navy!!
